2011 IAAF World Championships
Information from Daegu, Korea
At
the World Championships in Daegu, Korea, two current world record
holders discovered that the letters DQ failed to signify a Dairy
Queen treat and were far from sweet. Usain Bolt and Dayron Robles
were disqualified respectively in the finals of the 100m Dash and
the 100m Hurdles. Videos of the disqualifications follow.
Bolt was quick out of the blocks - far too quick and was called for the false start. However, an interesting video analysis (available below) by Robert Johnson of LetsRun.com suggests that perhaps the winner Yohan Blake should have been singled out as the culprit.
Robles however was disqualified in a more unusual turn of events. His penaly was imposed for making contact with China's Liu Xiang over the last hurdle.
A review of the video of the race shows Robles seemingly grabbing at the left wrist of Liu. Liu explained that "Robles hit me twice, at the ninth hurdle he pulled at me but I'm sure it wasn't intentional...I lost my balance when I came to the 10th hurdle because of the bump. If not for the incident, I would have been the gold medallist."
Liu was rather magnanimous in further saying "(i)t happens all the time in the competitions. But this time, in the final of World championships, it was kind of different. I am OK with everything that happened today and this is a good achievement for me. Robles was well prepared. I tried my best (and have) no regret."
