3-Class Track Gets Nod

By virtue of the following IHSA announcement 3 class track is here to stay, at least for the current moment. In the absence of further action, the failure to include Proposals 10, 11 and 12 onto the annual referendum ballot by the IHSA Legislative Commission affirmed the pending implementation of 3 class track next season.

Legislative Commission Votes to Place 6 of 15 Proposals on Annual Referendum Ballot

Six of the 15 proposals submitted to change the Illinois High School Association Constitution and By-laws were placed on the annual referendum ballot by the Legislative Commission at its second meeting Monday (Nov. 27) in the IHSA Office. A total of 34 of the 35 commissioners attended Monday's meeting.

Following are the proposals on the 2006 IHSA annual referendum: No. 5, 6 (as modified), 7 (as modified), 8, 14, and 15. The others were rejected by the Legislative Commission. (The text of the original proposals is available in a PDF document.)

The ballot containing the proposals will be available online to IHSA member schools in the IHSA Schools Center on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The deadline to submit the online ballot is midnight, Friday, Dec. 29. The ballots will be tabulated and the results posted on Thursday, Jan. 4. A simple majority of votes cast on each proposal will determine whether it passes.

Proposal No. 6 was modified by its submitter prior to the Town Meetings. The final wording is as follows:

Add By-law 3.082 to read:

3.082    Schools may provide an individual or teams that win an IHSA state championship, a ring/memento not to exceed $200 in fair market value.  Businesses, booster clubs or other organizations desiring to make contributions toward the purchase of a championship ring/memento must make those contributions to the school.

Proposal No. 7 was modified by its submitter prior to the Town Meetings. The final wording is as follows:

Revise By-law 3.083 to read:

3.083    A student in a member school may accept any other award for participation in an athletic contest, or for athletic honors or recognition, which does not exceed $75 in fair market value, in the following sports:  badminton, baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, wrestling, and any other sport in which the student’s school provides interscholastic competition.  In addition, a student in a member school may receive and retain items of wearing apparel which are worn for non-school athletic competition as part of a team uniform provided for and worn by the student during competition.
